33C raises $94,882 for American Heart Association
Homer School District 33C students are all heart, raising an incredible
$94,882 for the American Heart Association.
Students raised the cash this past month by participating in a variety
of Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart campaigns at their schools.
They were honored at the March 14 Board of Education meeting, attended
by Stefani White, senior youth market director for the American Heart
Association.
“To come up here and just say ‘Thank You’ doesn’t seem like enough,” she
said. “For five participating schools to raise almost $95,000 just doesn’t
happen.”
She credited the school’s P.E. teachers for the achievement.
“I give you guys the tools and then you take it,” she said. “You are the
ones that make it successful.”
P.E. teachers Scott Wilkins, John Fencl, Jane Fojtik, Jarid Dyal, Jaclyn
Crawford, Nate Keasler, Tammie Ebel, Melody Johnson, Jeff Jonaitis and Wendy
Bruin took turns sharing how much their schools raised this year and who the
top fundraisers were at each one.
They also shared how many lives their students saved as a result of
their fundraising efforts. According to the American Heart Association, for
every $50 raised, one life is saved.
Here’s what each Homer 33C school achieved:

Hadley Middle School -
$5,724, 114 lives saved
●
William J. Butler School -
$16,922, 338 lives saved
●
Goodings Grove School -
$21,105, 422 lives saved
●
Luther J. Schilling School
- $32,884, 657 lives saved
●
William E. Young School -
$18,247, 365 lives saved
“Thank you guys so much for year over year being so supportive of our
mission and fighting heart disease,” said White.
She singled out Schilling School P.E. teachers Melody Johnson and Jeff
Jonaitis for a special recognition, saying their school raised an additional $11,000
over last year.
“That is the biggest dollar increase of all the schools that I work
with,” she said. “Those are brand new dollars that are going toward saving
lives this year.”
She then presented Johnson and Jonaitis with red superhero capes,
explaining: “You are truly heart heroes.”
