Alliant/Mesirow Insurance Services has joined Homer 33C’s effort to save Ross School.

The company, which provides insurance services to Homer 33C employees, recently donated $500 to help restore the one-room schoolhouse on Bell Road.

“Recognizing and remembering the initial impact this school house had on the local community with teaching the children of Homer Glen, and looking at the continued growth in the community regarding the continued education of the children in Homer Glen, we think the restoration of this school house, and the ability for the community to visit this important landmark, will continue to motivate current generations and generations to come to think big with regards to education,” said Mark Kmety, managing director/executive vice president for Alliant/Mesirow Insurance Services.

The one-room schoolhouse served generations of area students up until 1956 when Homer Community Consolidated School District 33C was established with the consolidation of six one-room schoolhouses.

It was moved from 159th Street to the entrance of Homer Junior High School/Hadley Middle School in 1997 and used for live history lessons for a number of years.

In 2017, Homer 33C embarked on a mission to restore the school by launching a $10,000 fundraising campaign.

So far, it has been able to install a new roof with volunteer labor and materials donated by Filotto Construction and Richards Building Supply Company.

In the spring, it plans to address the rotted siding and trim with help from Crockett Construction.
