Raises $965 to restore one-room schoolhouse

Thanks to Schilling School families and staff members, Homer 33C is $965 closer to saving Ross School.

The school’s Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) organized a fundraiser in April, selling popcorn, Smencils (scented pencils), Smickers (scented stickers) and gel crayons during lunch periods.

They also opened a donation portal on the PTO website, inviting families and staff members to help save the 1850s schoolhouse by making a donation.

“We’ve heard stories from Schilling parents and former teachers about Ross School and how its history once played a role in academics,” said Schilling PTO Secretary Barb Koutsky. “Teachers and students have memories of taking a break from the normal school day to hold a reading class in the one-room schoolhouse. By coming together as a community, memories like these can be made once again. We wanted to help play a role in making that happen.”

Ross School, which stands at the entrance to Homer Junior High School and Hadley Middle School, served generations of area students up until 1956 when Homer Community Consolidated School District 33C was established with the consolidation of six one-room schoolhouses.

It was once used for live history lessons but had to be closed because of safety concerns.

In 2017, Homer 33C embarked on a mission to restore the school by launching a $10,000 fundraising campaign.

So far, it has raised just over $5,000 and installed a new roof with volunteer labor and materials donated by Filotto Construction and Richards Building Supply Company.

Soon, it will address the rotted siding and trim with help from Crockett Construction. Will-Cook Ace Hardware has agreed to donate the paint.

This summer, volunteers will install two new doors -- one purchased with donations and the other donated by Richards Building Supply Company.
