Grade school years come to a close for 428 Homer Jr High students
Congratulations Class of 2018!

Homer School District 33C is just a memory now for 428 young adults.

On June 1, the Homer Junior High School Class of 2018 completed their grade school years and collected their 8th grade diplomas from the Board of Education.

“Eighth grade graduation is an important milestone in the academic careers of our young adults,” said Principal Troy Mitchell.

“As with any graduating class, the emotions of sending our students to high school are bittersweet,” he added. “We send the Class of 2018 off fully prepared to succeed in high school and beyond, but are of course sad to see such a tremendous group of students leave our school.”

The end was bittersweet for many, including classmates Brinda Parikh and Abigail Obradovic who were selected by their teachers to deliver the commencement speeches.

“As much as I have looked forward to this day, I have never been a fan of endings,” said Brinda.

“I feel that this year flew by in terms of schoolwork -- even through all the stress, projects, homework, tests and more,” added. “But through all of that, through these past nine years, we were raised.

“We were reared as people by our parents, students by our teachers and as classmates from our peers,” she continued. “We were taught to be hard-working, intelligent, funny, kind and so much more thanks to some in this very audience.”

Student Council Co-Presidents Emma Morgan and Adam Zidan President recapped some of the Class of 2018’s accomplishments this past year, including a fundraiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and a letter writing campaign for troops serving our country.

Classmates Kyra DeNormandie and Emily Formella recognized groups of students who had demonstrated outstanding achievement in academics, music and athletics while choral director Diane Pullara led graduating members of the Homer Junior High Chorus as they sang this year’s graduation song, “This is Me.”

“Each graduating class leaves a lasting impression on the staff of Homer Junior High,” Mitchell told families, “and this year’s eighth-graders are certainly no exception.”
