In joliet today at the city's plan commission meeting over 100 residents gathered to protest the building of a new Love's travel center on Briggs St in Joliet near the interchange with I-80. Over 32 people spoke, some stepping to the podium for a second time.
Through the entire meeting people took turns speaking on the project. Residents stated they wished not to have a Loves travel center in their neighborhood. Most rooting their complaints back to traffic, public safety. and property value. Pastor Warren Dorris a former Joliet City Council Member stated " I would first like to apologize to this planning commission, because I am part of the problem. As a Joliet city council member I voted for Center Point and now I can see the effects of that has had on our community." As people took turns speaking, the planning commission listened and heard each and every person.
Soon after Dorris, Joliet Resident Brandon Harris went on to say " I am a tax paying resident of Joliet, and at the age of 28, I do not want to bear the tax burden of generations prior to mine, no one my age does. Now we have a business willing to fix our roads when our state will not, and they are bringing in tax revenue. A young man here today Pastor Warren Dorris opposes the travel center, yet he brought the problem here in the first place."
As the meeting came to vote the vote came out 6 - 2. The Commissioners who voted for the plan were Chairman Joseph Strong, Jeff Crompton,Jason Cox, Brigette Fiday, Fredrick Moore and Marc Rousonelos. Voting no were Dominic Orlando and Tim Broderick.
The plan will now be voted on by City Council some time in October. As this moves forward our team here at The Will County News will keep up with the story.
