At the January 23rd Board of Education meeting:

     Parents Nancy and Joe Beissel; Melissa Chandarana; and Chris Coopman praised the District’s Special Services Department, especially Director Becky Cortesi-Caruso, for taking a personal interest in students and their families so that individual needs are met

     Member DeSchaaf reported the Board’s Facility Committee met with architects this week to review  pre-purchase bid results for the roof units at Transportation and the unit ventilator at Homer Junior High. Ready to approve expenditures and move forward with projects. Next month, the Committee will delve further into school security

     Teachers Union representative Cathy Clayton reported the Council continues to work alongside Dr. Coglianese to improve problem-solving skills and understanding of the channels to follow when concerns arise

     No report from the Support Staff Union

     The Board approved the following personnel recommendations:
            Resignations
     1. Teresa Kocanda - administrative assistant, Administration, change in effective date for retirement
          from January 31, 2019 to December 31, 2018
     2. Colleen Santo - lunchroom monitor, Hadley Middle School, effective December 20, 2017

1.    1.0 FTE paraprofessional, Young School, effective February 9, 2018

 Employment Recommendations
1.    Bernice Moskal - 1.0 FTE evening custodian, Hadley Middle School, effective February 5, 2018
2.    Catherine Koniewicz - building and grounds secretary, Administration, effective January 29, 2018
3.    Yvette Salcik - 1.0 FTE paraprofessional, Young School, effective February 9, 2018
4.    Jacqueline Herrera - 1.0 FTE paraprofessional, Butler School, effective February 5, 2018
5.    Jared McCarthy - track coach, effective for the 2017-2018 school year

     Special Services Director Becky Cortesi-Caruso, Special Services Assistant Director David Mekhiel and AT/PI teacher Cindy Mrotek presented a report on the District’s Special Education Program, including its Early Childhood/Little Learners Program, Resource Program, Instructional Program, Co-Taught Program and Specialized Instruction Program. The District currently serves 597 special education students, which represents 16.1 percent of its total population. Placement is based on need and not disability, meaning children are placed where they will be most successful

     The Board approved the rooftop dedicated outdoor HVAC air units to Trane U.S., Co. in the amount of $96,287

     The Board approved the vertical unit ventilators to Midwest Applied Solutions, Inc in the amount of $213,570

     The Board discussed the District’s exit interview process for employees and asked that surveys be included in their Board packet each month

     The Board accepted a Memorandum of Understanding between Homer CCSD 33C and Homer District 33C Support Staff Council of the American Federation of Teachers, Local 604 regarding a change to the number of work days for clerical aides. All clerical aides will work two additional days prior to the start of every school year

     The Board approved a Memorandum of Understanding between Homer CCSD 33C and Homer District 33C Support Staff Council of the American Federation of Teachers, Local 604 regarding the agreement and recognition of the HVAC Technician as part of the bargaining unit -- including uniforms, work schedule, summer hours and salary schedule




The Next Regular School Board Meeting is February 27, 2018 at 7:00 p.m.
