ISRA Thursday Bulletin - May 31, 2018
Executive Directors Message
This is the last day of the regular Spring Session of the Illinois General Assembly. This has been a seemingly long session. We have witnessed a terribly anti-gun bill passed and vetoed by the Governor, something I have never seen before. I am sure we will see this again. The Illinois Legislature has always had a strong anti-gun presence, but this year it is as bad as it has ever been. The pro-gun side did not come out unscathed but Governor Rauner stopped the worst of it. As I write this, session is not over yet but I can tell you what we saw is the prelude of things to come. This summer and fall is going to be the most important time for the pro-gun community. Every firearm owner needs to be onboard and understand how important this upcoming election is. Gun owners must join together and stay joined together.
In some fun news, from the website Second City Cop, regarding ardent anti-gun priest Father Pfleger: It seems that the anti-gun Pfleger has armed security and one of them was arrested for carrying a gun without a license outside of St. Sabina, Father Pfleger’s church. Apparently the anti-gun Archdiocese forgot to tell Pfleger that carrying a gun is against the rules; of course, there are rules that apply to some of us and not others - do as I say, not as I do. The other question that comes to mind is why this guy didn’t get an Illinois Concealed Carry License? Surely he wouldn’t have been a prohibited person would he? Don’t you just love unlimited hypocrisy?
On Tuesday, State Representative Reggie Phillips introduced House Resolution 1138 (HR1138) which urges making Chicago the 51st state. HR1138 is an outgrowth of the frustration of the high-handed ways Chicago influences the rest of the state. This is similar to the sanctuary county for gun owners’ movement we are now seeing. The resolution has some interesting history in it. Take a few minutes and read it.
Yesterday, the highly flawed Gun Dealer Licensing Bill, SB337, passed the Illinois Senate and is on the way to the Governor’s desk. Hopefully the Governor will Amendatory Veto or outright Veto this bill. If he does either one, SB337 will not become law right away because it will have to be heard in one of two Veto Sessions this fall. Although not scheduled yet, the first Veto Session is usually in mid-November and the Second Veto Session follows in early December.
SB337 is one of those “we have to do something, even if it is wrong” bills, which is why Illinois is continuously in a pickle. SB337 will not solve anything that the proponents claim it will. It will just be tough on Firearm Dealers and Illinois gun owners. In my opinion, that was the real purpose of the bill in the first place.
