Sanctuary State Illinois: Illegal Alien Convicted of Raping Three Women After Failing to Be Deported

An illegal alien who failed to be deported in 2012 was convicted and sentenced this week for the rape of two women and a third, now deceased, whom he admitted to raping.
Miguel Luna, a 37-year-old illegal alien from Mexico, was sentenced to 80 years in prison after being convicted of raping two women in 2015 and 2016, according to the Chicago Tribune. A third woman whom the illegal alien raped has since died, though prosecutors revealed evidence showing Luna admitting to the rape.
Luna had an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) final order for removal placed on him in 2012 before the rapes occurred, but the deportation order was never honored. Illinois is, for the most part, a sanctuary state where illegal aliens are protected from being deported.
Judge David Carlson laid into the illegal alien as he passed down the 80-year prison sentence.
“You were free to do these acts … whether through misguided political correctness or people who do not believe in laws or borders,” Carlson told Luna, according to the Chicago Tribune.
“One thing I can do with the sentence is show that the laws we believe in here, maybe this won’t happen again, maybe that’s a little bit of closure,” Carlson said.
The illegal alien is mandated to serve at least 85 percent of his prison sentence and he must register as a sex offender should he ever be released from prison.

4 Key Facts About ICE, and What Could Happen If It’s Abolished Fred Lucas
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials on Aug. 14 arrested and deported an illegal immigrant who is wanted in El Salvador on murder charges.
Brian Alejandro Martinez reportedly had been arrested and freed several times in New Jersey and New York. ICE officials criticized authorities in Middlesex County, New Jersey, for releasing Martinez without notifying the federal agency.
While Immigration and Customs Enforcement in recent years has had to contend with “sanctuary” policies by cities and counties that protect illegal immigrants, the agency now faces a push by some in Congress to abolish it.
President Donald Trump is scheduled to honor ICE agents Monday at a White House event, even as many congressional Democrats call for restraining or ending the agency that enforces immigration law throughout the nation’s interior.
The House adopted a resolution last month supporting ICE agents, but 167 Democrats refused to vote for it.
Rep. Mark Pocan, D-Wis., co-chairman of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, last month led a group of Democrats in sponsoring legislation to abolish ICE, saying:
President Trump’s blanket directive to round up and target all undocumented immigrants underscores the unchecked power which ICE has used to terrorize our communities. From conducting raids at garden centers and meatpacking plants, to targeting families outside churches and schools, the president is using ICE as a mass-deportation force to rip apart the moral fabric of our nation.Sadly, President Trump has so misused ICE that the agency can no longer accomplish its goals effectively. As a result, the best path forward is this legislation, which would end ICE and transfer its critical functions to other executive agencies.
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., and New York Mayor Bill de Blasio are among Democrats who have said they support getting rid of ICE.
Just 25 percent of voters say they are for abolishing the agency, according to a Politico/Morning Consult poll released last month.
Trump has fired back in defense of ICE.
“Leading Democrat politicians have called to abolish ICE—nobody even believes it, they want to abolish ICE,” Trump said last month. “In other words, they want open borders and more crime, and that’s what you’re going to get. You’ll get more crime as you open up those borders.”
Primarily an immigration enforcement agency that doesn’t operate on the border, Immigration and Customs Enforcement still performs other functions. Here are four major facts about ICE, and what could happen if it ceases to exist.
1. Protecting Minority Communities
If ICE were abolished, minority communities would be disproportionately harmed, said Matthew T. Albence, the agency’s executive associate director for enforcement and removal.
“These minority communities are the primary victims now, because these individuals are involved in gang activity and other criminal activity and generally they commit those crimes against those in the same communities in which they reside,” Albence told the Senate Judiciary Committee on July 31.
His remarks came in an exchange during a hearing when Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, asked: “What if we just decided to abolish ICE? What would be the impact on our country in terms of public safety?”
Albence responded:
You cannot have strong border security with a void in the interior. If an individual knows that they can come to the country and try and try and try and eventually get past the Border Patrol, and that there is no chance of any enforcement being taken against them, then you will never have border security.What in effect you are saying if you’re getting rid of the interior enforcement arm of immigration enforcement, you’re saying you want border security, you want Border Patrol to make all these arrests and stop people there, but once they get by the Border Patrol, let them go.
2. Enforcing Immigration Law
Before 9/11, naturalization of legal immigrants and enforcement of immigration laws were under one agency—the Immigration and Naturalization Service, or INS.
When Congress created the Department of Homeland Security in 2003, it established ICE as the enforcement arm while U.S. Customs and Immigration Services would be in charge of naturalizing legal immigrants.
The 9/11 Commission noted that terrorists involved in the 2001 attacks exploited U.S. immigration rules and some of the hijackers violated the terms of their visas.
A third arm of Homeland Security, called U.S. Customs and Border Protection and including the Border Patrol, is responsible for stopping illegal immigrants from entering the country. Trump will honor that agency’s work Monday as well as ICE’s.
But once illegal immigrants slip past the border, only ICE can enforce laws on the interior, arresting and deporting illegal immigrants.
The Trump administration significantly increased enforcement compared to the Obama administration. In fiscal year 2017, which began Oct. 1, 2016, nearly four months before Trump took office, ICE made 143,470 arrests and deported 226,119 individuals.
In fiscal year 2016, the last full fiscal year of the Obama administration, the agency made 77,806 arrests. Although removals were higher that year—240,255—ICE asserts that was “largely attributed to the decline in border apprehensions.”
The arrests during fiscal 2017 included 127,000 illegal immigrants who were charged or convicted of crimes inside the United States, according to the White House.
More than 1,800 of those were homicides and another 48,000 were assaults. ICE made 4,818 gang-related arrests.

“ICE also conducts investigations for violations under the federal criminal code for things like visa fraud, naturalization fraud, passport fraud, [and] alien unlawfully in possession of a firearm,” Dan Cadman, a former INS and ICE agent, told The Daily Signal.
“Do other agencies also handle some of this work? They do, but there are never enough law enforcement officers to handle all of the violations,” Cadman, now a fellow at the Center for Immigration Studies, a pro-enforcement think tank, told The Daily Signal. “Disbanding ICE would diminish the already finite pool of federal agents available.”
Abolishing ICE doesn’t have a clear endgame, he said, since it seems pointless to transfer functions or create a new agency to do the same things.
“Is it in fact just an end-around, to try and be sure that there is no agency available to do the things that Congress and the law as written require?” Cadman asked, adding that he suspects that is the case.
In a move unrelated to what some Democrats are pushing, 19 ICE special agents last month signed a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen asking that ICE be broken into two separate agencies.
One would focus on enforcement and removal while the other would focus on investigations, intelligence gathering and fraud, human trafficking, and dismantling gangs.
3. Targeting Smugglers of People, Drugs, Guns
Immigration and Customs Enforcement also combats the smuggling of people, drugs, money, counterfeit merchandise, and weapons into the United States. This includes confronting sexual trafficking, and in some cases, fighting child pornography.
ICE made more than 11,000 arrests related to weapon offenses in fiscal year 2017, according to the White House.
The agency is also responsible for “repatriation of cultural treasures,” or returning expensive items stolen from another country.
ICE investigates large-scale human smuggling organizations that pose a national security risk, use violence, or take hostages.
It targets the human smuggling chain immediately beyond the smugglers themselves. This includes overseas recruiters and organizations, fraudulent document providers, and transportation and employment networks that benefit from human smuggling operations.
During fiscal 2017, ICE made more than 5,000 arrests related to sexual assaults and more than 2,000 related to kidnapping.
It also apprehended more than 76,000 people for offenses involving dangerous drugs, according to the White House. Agents seized more than 980,000 pounds of narcotics, including 2,370 pounds of fentanyl and 6,967 pounds of heroin.
Increased enforcement on all these fronts is key, said Ira Mehlman, spokesman for the Federation for American Immigration Reform, which advocates enforcing current law.
“Any enforcement agency is only as good as the politicians running it,” Mehlman told The Daily Signal. “If you’ve got an agency of law enforcement professionals, it’s still the political bosses that decide to implement or not implement the law.”
4. Preventing Terrorism
ICE also specializes in identifying dangerous individuals before they enter the United States, or finding them after they illegally enter.
The agency’s Counterterrorism and Criminal Exploitation Unit is comprised of two divisions: the Terrorist Tracking and Pursuit Group and the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System Exploitation Section.
The terrorist tracking group coordinates with other Homeland Security agencies to identify those who overstayed or otherwise violated their visas.
The student and visitor section investigates foreign nationals here for educational purposes who could be involved in criminal or terrorist activity or in intelligence gathering for a foreign power.

The Democrats Have No Idea What Demons They Are Unleashing

A few weeks ago, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) wrote an article for Vox explaining the movement’s goals – to end capitalism and radically change America.
In normal times, the declarations of a fringe party and ideology in America would not merit much attention. However, these are not normal times. A new Gallup pollshows that more Democrats have a favorable view of socialism than capitalism.
This pattern has been building for a while. Senator Bernie Sanders took socialism mainstream in the party during the 2016 Democratic presidential primary. Since then, Democratic Party candidates have been increasingly attaching themselves to the ideology. Most notably, a telegenic young member of the Democratic Socialists of America named Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez defeated a senior Democrat in New York’s 14th Congressional District and has since been on a whirlwind media tour, spreading the gospel of socialism.
So, the Vox article (or manifesto) is worth taking seriously.
Reading it, I was struck by two things.
First, it was remarkably honest.
The writer, Meagan Day, a member of the East Bay Chapter of DSA, explicitly debunks the apologists in the mainstream media trying to paper over the group’s radicalism. She quotes several prominent news “analysts” who argue that Democratic Socialism is just New Deal liberalism rebranded. She then dumps a bucket of cold water on them, writing, “[i]n the long run, Democratic Socialists want to end capitalism.”
In fact, she writes that the liberal, big government reforms which the movement has chosen to rally behind in partnership with the Democratic Party are simply stepping stones to this eventual goal.
“Social democratic reforms like Medicare-for-all are, in the eyes of DSA, part of the long, uneven process of building that support, and eventually overthrowing capitalism,” she writes.
This explicit goal of ending capitalism makes clear what Ocasio-Cortez meant when she said cryptically in a recent interview, that “[c]apitalism has not always existed in the world, and it will not always exist in the world.”
This is a clear threat to the system which has made us prosperous and the envy of the world, but I appreciate the honesty. Ultimately, the United States is a democratic republic. If Day, Ocasio-Cortez, and Senator Bernie Sanders want to try and convince most Americans to end capitalism and embrace a planned, totally redistributionist economy, they are welcome to use the democratic process to do so. It is up to those of us who know better to convince Americans of socialism’s folly (more on that in a later newsletter).
However, the second notable item in Day’s article suggests that Democratic Socialists don’t value democracy all that much. Day also identified herself as a staff writer at a New York-based, socialist magazine called Jacobin. In fact, several members of the Democratic Socialists of America are writers and editors at Jacobin magazine.
A magazine that would enthusiastically embrace this title is signaling that, like socialist movements of the past, the DSA is willing to drop the “democratic” part of their moniker and instead rely on the traditional method for socialist revolution – bloodshed, violence, and tyranny.
The Jacobins were the most violent and radical political group of the French Revolution. Led by Maximilien Robespierre, the group responded to a growing backlash against the revolution by executing anyone their so-called Committee of Public Safety deemed insufficiently loyal. The Jacobin clubs located throughout the country were used as a secret police force to root out dissent among politicians and the general populace alike. Historian Timothy Tackett estimates that almost 40,000 people were killed under the Jacobin control of the French government. Many were beheaded by guillotine in a grotesque public spectacle after a show trial, and others were brutally executed with firearms. In the case of one period in the city of Lyon, people were executed en masse by cannon fire. This period of carnage was known as the Reign of Terror.
A few years ago, Callista and I saw Dialogues of the Carmelites at the Washington National Opera. It is a moving, true story of the Carmelite Nuns who refused to denounce Christ at the peak of the Reign of Terror. (The French Revolution was virulently anti-Catholic – many churches were closed and reopened as “Temples of Reason.”) The nuns were beheaded for their unwillingness to denounce their faith. Moments before the guillotine dropped, they displayed the power of God’s love by singing hymns and renewing their vows.
A few years later we visited the Picpus Cemetery in Paris. It holds the graves of the martyred nuns and more than 1,300 victims of the Terror in a six-week period of 1794. It is a very sober reminder of what the Jacobins did during the Reign of Terror. It is not a record for which any American should advocate.
Christopher Hibbert’s The French Revolution contains more vivid details of the horrors the Jacobins inflicted upon the people of France. In one instance, he writes, “a woman was charged with the heinous crime of having wept at the execution of her husband. She was condemned to sit several hours under the suspended blade which shed upon her, drop by drop, the blood of the deceased whose corpse was above her on the scaffold before she was released by death from her agony.”
Make no mistake: This is the history of violent revolution, religious oppression, and dictatorship that Jacobin magazine, the DSA, and opportunistic Democrats are embracing – whether they know it or not. Senator Sanders, and more have recently shared articles from Jacobin magazine on their social media accounts. Representative Keith Ellison once sent a Jacobin piece to everyone in Congress.
It is hard to imagine a modern-day Reign of Terror happening in America. But consider the recent phenomenon of outrage mobs on social media demanding people be fired and ostracized for expressing un-PC points of view. Think about the left-wing activists taking over classrooms to prevent conservative voices from speaking. Think about the rash of people being attacked for wearing MAGA hats. Think about the violence of Antifa.
Perhaps it is not so difficult to imagine.
While I do not know Ocasio-Cortez, I have interacted with Senator Sanders numerous times in my career. He is an earnest guy, and I seriously doubt he would countenance violence in pursuit of his socialist goals.
He should keep in mind, however, that the Jacobins eventually turned on Robespierre (in fact they executed him). So perhaps Senator Sanders and the other Democrats rushing to embrace Democratic Socialism should be a little more careful about the demons they are unleashing to win elections.

Something better to do
Then, everything went awry. The neo-Nazis couldn't rally enough people to fill both sides of a football field. The "antifa," deprived of assaulting "white supremacists," turned their unhinged rage on the police, and then America; proclaiming all cops to be KKK members, along with the usual "white privilege" nonsense. The media, desperate to cling to their latest narrative collapse, tried to make a couple dozen seriously sorry-looking examples of the "master race" look like the rise of the Fourth Reich, while simultaneously ignoring the fact that the "antifa" have essentially become the brownshirts of the "resistance." There was shrieking, cursing, violence and enough litter to denude acres of pristine, old-growth, forests.
And there was nothing of substance. That's when I realized: None of these people deserve anywhere near the time in public consciousness that they're allotted. Doofuses in Gap® khakis, golf shirts and tiki torches do not rank that highly on my list of people about whom I care. Freaks in theater-club body armor who spit and throw stuff are just overgrown toddlers. The only substantive differences between them is that the neo-Nazis don't wear Che' t-shirts and the antifa don't bathe frequently. If anything, antifa is more of a threat to the rest of us than Richard Spencer's nerdburgers. But really, in a proxy war between acolytes of Hitler and Stalin, I'm rooting for a 0-0 tie.
With that in mind, I gave up on writing the monster column, and watched a great final round of the PGA Championship. A white guy managed to beat a black guy, among others, in a thrilling finish in which no one got assaulted, spit on, cursed at or arrested and nothing got broken.

Stay ready with regular vehicle maintenance
Aside from the beans, bullets, bandages and so forth that are the essential elements that form the bedrock of emergency preparedness, a vehicle is a key component to success in the prepping game. It doesn't matter if it is getting someone the emergency medical treatment they desperately need, obtaining supplies or getting the heck out of town, your vehicle can be vital for navigating an emergency.
Because of the importance of a functional vehicle, all measures should be taken to keep it running and in tip-top shape. It is also widely accepted that prevention is often easier and less costly than making repairs. Taking the approach of preventive maintenance along with regular inspection and having the tools/supplies on hand to address any issue that might come up is the recipe for success to having an emergency ready vehicle.Vehicle inspection
Part of maintaining a vehicle is doing routine checks to prevent any incidents from happening. These are usually simple tasks that don't take much time but can be extremely helpful in avoiding a situation that could be much worse if it is not caught early.
Things to consider for regular inspection include:
- Check tires to see if they are in good shape and properly inflated. Look specifically for any nails or punctures, uneven wear, bulges, etc.
- Listen for any odd sounds coming from the engine or vehicle components.
- Look for evidence of leaks underneath the vehicle. Keep in mind that it is common for condensation to drip from the air conditioning; this does not mean there is a problem. You want to look for oil, transmission fluid, coolant, etc. that might be leaking.
- Check windshield wipers to ensure that they are in good shape. Also check to see that there is adequate windshield washer fluid.
- Visually inspect all vehicle lights to ensure they are functioning properly. This should include headlights (high and low beams), brake lights, turn signals and fog lights if your vehicle is equipped with them.
- Step on the brakes to ensure that they hold firmly and that there is not excessive travel in the brake pedal.
- Look at the battery to see if there is corrosion building up around the terminals. (Pouring regular Coca-Cola on the terminals and letting it sit for several minutes will help clear up corrosion on the terminals.)
- Examine the hoses and belts around the engine to ensure that they are in good shape and are not cracking or damaged in any way.
- Check your dashboard for any check engine or warning lights.
- Take out the spare tire and examine for proper inflation as well as any defects.
The frequency of these checks is up to you but consider the age of the vehicle and how it usually runs in making this determination. Weekly checks are a good idea, but this may be extended if the circumstances dictate.
Vehicle maintenance intervals
Following the practice of regular vehicle inspections, proactive maintenance should be the next area of concern to ensure that your vehicle is prepared for an emergency. The single best source for the maintenance intervals for your particular vehicle is the owner's manual. If you do not have the owner's manual, an internet search should be able to provide the same information.
A few of the maintenance services that should be completed routinely on all vehicles and a general idea of when they are recommended to be done are:
- Oil Change: Every three months or 3,000 to 5,000 miles (most newer vehicles can go much higher, up to 10,000 miles)
- Tire Rotation: Every 5,000 miles
- Air Filter: Every six months
- Windshield Wipers: Every six months
- Cabin Air Filter: Every 12 months
- Coolant Flush: Every 40,000 miles
- Transmission Flush: Every 50,000 miles
- Brakes: As needed, listen for squeaking that indicates severe brake wear and feel for brakes that do not work as good as you think they should.
- Timing Belt: Every 60,000 miles
- Serpentine Belt: Every 40,000 miles
- Spark Plugs: Every 30,000 miles
One thing to think about when having maintenance done on your vehicle is to keep track of what was done and when it was done. This can be a written log or even an envelope with all the receipts from maintenance work.
In the midst of a disaster we know that there will not always be the reliable help of roadside assistance or the ability to phone a friend to come to the rescue. This means that self-recovery will be the primary solution available to fix a problem. If that doesn't do the trick, abandoning your means of transportation just means additional hardship for you and potentially the loss of your vehicle.
Items to keep in vehicle
1. First-aid Kit: While a first-aid kit has numerous applications, having one in your vehicle is a necessity when it comes to vehicle maintenance because of the potential to obtain an injury when working with tools, moving parts and tight spaces.2. Jumper Cables: Consider the type of vehicle that you have and choose the proper size.
- 10 Gauge = Compact Car
- 8 Gauge = Mid-Size Vehicle
- 6 Gauge = Full-Size Vehicle
- 4 Gauge = Trucks and SUV's
4. Flares or Warning Triangles
5. Extra Quart of Engine Oil: Proper type for your vehicle
6. Extra Coolant: Proper type for your vehicle
7. Mechanic Gloves
8. Tool Kit: Basic mechanical tools with a minimum of crescent wrenches, vise grips, screwdrivers and a multi-tool
9. Portable Air Compressor: The type that is small and plugs into power adapter
10. Flashlight or Headlamp with Extra Batteries
11. Duct Tape
12. Fix-A-Flat: Canned tire sealant
13. Spare Tire
14. Tire Jack: Ensure that it is adequate for the vehicle and easy to operate. Don't trust that the factory tire jack is the best tool for the job.
15. Tire Iron
16. Extra Fuses: There are multiple ratings of fuses that are in each vehicle. A best practice is to have a variety pack to ensure that you have what you need. It is also helpful to have a fuse removal tool for easy changes.
17. Replacement Light Bulbs
18. Multiple Sizes of Hose Clamps
19. Radiator Hose: This is especially important if you have an older vehicle or one with more than 100,000 miles on it.
20. Fire Extinguisher
21. Emergency Fuel: There are stable fuel substitutes that are safe to keep in the trunk of a vehicle. A single bottle will get you down the road an additional 10-20 miles typically.
22. Empty Gas Can w/ Siphon & Funnel: To get fuel if needed and have the ability to siphon fuel in an extreme emergency.
23. Spare Fan Belt: This is another item that is important for older and high mileage vehicles.
During the winter months, additional items that should be included are:
- Cat Litter: This can be placed under the tires and is helpful for obtaining traction during wet, snowy and icy conditions.
- Collapsible/Small Shovel: While not fun, a small shovel can help you dig your tires out if you were to get stuck.
- Ice Scraper
- Tire Chains: You'll have to check local laws to see if they are legal, but these will help keep your vehicle on the road on snow and ice.
With all of that said, every vehicle is different and the type of driving that you do the most will also dictate how often maintenance has to be done and what should be done. The bottom line is that taking the time to ensure that maintenance is done will not only be easier than repairs, it can be cheaper, you can determine when it is done, and most importantly... you will be in the best position to deal with an emergency from a transportation standpoint.
