Letter to the Editor/ Climate Change Referendum Question at Homer Township Annual Town Meeting

Concerning the Annual Town meeting April 10th 6pm, 160th and Cedar at the Old Town Hall (next to shilling school)  Try to get there early as you must sign in as a registrared voter in Homer Township.

As I understand it, a proposal for an advisory referendum question will be discussed at the Homer Township Annual Town meeting. The electors (which are all registered voters in HT) will vote on this proposal. The question for the referendum is:

“Shall our Representatives and Senators in the U.S. Congress sponsor and/ or support measures that will acknowledge the serious threat posed by climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in a clear, transparent, and effective way?”

I am for clean air, but I disagree with the seriousness of the threat of climate change and global warming.  There are many local Homer Township, and National issues that our Representatives and Senators in the U.S. Congress need to focus on.  (Note: from Editor: bills promoting climate change usually mean a tax, fee, or regulation that citizens have to endure.)

Local issues include:

  • Water Bills,
  • Vacant Storefronts,
  • Curb Tax and Spend Policies, and
  • Lackluster New Residential Development.

National issues include:

  • Infrastructure Renewal,
  • Sensible Immigration Reform,
  • Make Personal Federal Tax reductions permanent,
  • Real Health Care, and
  • National & Homeland Security.

I oppose this suggestion for a referendum.  Our Representatives and Senators in the U.S. Congress have plenty on their plates that deserve higher priority.

Thanks,

Mark Gawron
