Trump’s Plan to Cut Budget by 5% Meets With Skepticism

With the federal budget deficit reaching $779 billion, President Donald Trump is asking Cabinet members to cut spending in their departments by 5 percent next fiscal year.
Because such trimming is hardly slashing the total budget, however, some experts question whether that even will make a difference in fiscal 2020, which will begin Oct. 1, 2019.
The national debt is more than $21 trillion.
“We’re going to ask every Cabinet secretary to cut 5 percent for next year,” Trump said Wednesday during a Cabinet meeting.
The president, asked about increases in defense spending, said: “The military was falling apart, it was depleted, it was in very bad shape.”
Congress approved an increase in the military budget to $716 billion for fiscal 2019, but there will be a cut, Trump said, “probably” to $700 billion, for fiscal 2020.
Given the $779 billion budget deficit, and a 13 percent increase in discretionary spending from 2017 to 2018, each department should be able to cut 5 percent, said Justin Bogie, senior policy analyst in fiscal affairs for The Heritage Foundation.
Federal spending is also set to increase by more than 3 percent from 2018 to 2019. Congress and federal agencies should adhere to the 2011 Budget Control Act, which limits the growth in spending, Bogie said.
“Congress should stick to the current discretionary budget caps and, moving forward, should look to implement a cap on all spending,” Bogie told The Daily Signal. “We support defense spending to the level needed. But if you increase it, you should find a way to pay for it through cuts elsewhere.”
The president acknowledged that some fiscal hawks likely won’t believe a 5 percent cut is enough.
“Some will say I can do much more than 5 [percent],” Trump said during the Cabinet meeting, but added: “It will get rid of the fat, get rid of the waste. It’ll have a huge impact.”
Such a cut is achievable, since government spending increased by 16 percent in the previous two years, said Maya MacGuineas, president of the nonprofit Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget.
“We should be able to scale back one-third of that, easily,” MacGuineas said in a prepared statement. “A 5 percent cut will actually cost money, though, since current law brings back budget caps next year that equal a 10 percent cut. So going with 5 percent over 10 percent means a $63 billion deficit increase just for a single year.”
She added:
Something will have to give if we stay on our current track. With trillion-dollar deficits returning in as soon as a year—indefinitely—5 percent budget cuts to a small portion of the budget will pale in comparison to what will be needed in 15 years.Thoughtful reforms phased in now over time will be much better for the American people and economic growth.
Presidential budget proposals rarely are enacted by Congress.
Some Cabinet members previously ran large organizations and will have some expertise in managing waste, said Tom Schatz, president of the nonprofit Citizens Against Government Waste.
“This is better than nothing, but we’d like to see more,” Schatz told The Daily Signal. “It’s achievable. We’d rather see a 10 percent cut.”
“If this was the Trump Organization,” Schatz said of the president, “he could say he wants a 10 percent cut and employees would come back with 15 percent. But given how government works, 5 percent is a good start.”

War on Nutrition

In 1939 while Hitler was attacking Poland with military warfare, in the United States the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) declared biological warfare on the American people by making it mandatory to add synthetic vitamins to white flour, which became known as "enriched" flour.
 The history books are full of details of Hitler's invasion, but not one word of the biological warfare by the FDA on the American people. Hitler's war ended. Biological warfare against the American people is still going on. This is a war of processed foods, chemical preservatives and sweeteners. Then when we get sick and debilitated, we are subjected to the drug warfare of the medical establishment. We look out on the landscape and we see symbiotic partners of the medical monopoly which includes the U.S. Government and the huge commercial food industry that creates those beautifully packaged "foods" that we buy at the supermarket, which foods are mostly devoid of nutrition. Nutritional deficiencies eventually translate into degenerative disease that feeds the medical machine. With what result? With the most expensive medical system in the history of the world, we are at an all-time high of deaths due to heart disease, cancer and stroke. The American people are helpless, sick and weak. They have been sold into dependence on government and science. Not one in a thousand will take the responsibility for their own health. Our immune function is getting weaker and weaker. Heart disease and cancer are nutritional deficiency diseases and silent starvation. Before 1918 and the widespread use of white bleached flour, there was no mention of heart attack as a disease. But today, after decades of chemical farming, we are a people on nutritional starvation. Biological warfare, under any other name, would be no worse. There are two kinds of starvation. Of course, one starvation comes about because of no food at all. The second and more insidious starvation is malnutrition over a period of time. Many seniors today die of pneumonia and the medical establishment can do nothing about it because they refuse to recommend nutrition instead of drugs. It has been well established over decades that no one will die of flu or pneumonia as long as they have vitamin C in the body. Dr. Alfred Hess, head of the Hebrew Infant Asylum in New York, established the fact before WWI that vitamin deficiency is the cause of heart disease, pneumonia, grippe, nasal diphtheria, scurvy, beri beri and many other named diseases. Heart disease and pneumonia are specific deficiency diseases. There is a second problem with malnutrition. It has to do with the great illusion and myth that synthetic vitamins and/or natural isolated vitamins will supplement one's diet and support the immune system as well as general good health. An isolated food factor or "vitamin" is a product of pharmacology and chemistry. A synthetic, isolated food factor is not food and certainly not nutrition. The science of food today is based on chemistry. There is a commercial vitamin industry in America, producing and selling counterfeit vitamins. They are riding high on public gullibility with the deception that isolated food factors or synthetic vitamins are nutritional and healthy. The simple answer to all this is whole food complexes that are live foods which contain live nutrition for live people. Medicine is in our food if we know where to find the natural foods. Let me recommend to you the humble carrot. Carrots contain many important nutrients, including beta carotene, B vitamins, vitamin C, calcium and potassium. The human body does a neat trick with beta carotene and changes it into vitamin A, which is very important in strengthening the immune system and promoting healthy growth of the cells. Beta carotene also boosts the immune system and is a very potent antioxidant. Antioxidants fight free radicals and help prevent them from causing membrane damage, DNA mutation and lipid (fat) oxidation. All of these conditions could lead to a variety of degenerative diseases. Another very important carotenoid found in carrots is alpha carotene. According to Michiaki Murakoshi, a biochemist at Japan's Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine, alpha carotene may be more powerful than beta carotene in inhibiting processes that may lead to tumor growth. It has been shown that cancer cells coated with carotenoids experience a decreased ability for formation and growth. Fresh fruits and vegetables like the carrot are very rich in enzymes. Enzymes are the catalysts for the hundreds of thousands of chemical reactions that occur throughout the body; they are essential for the digestion and absorption of food as well as for the production of cellular energy. Enzymes are essential for most of the building and rebuilding that goes on constantly in our bodies. Unfortunately, when foods are cooked, enzymes can be destroyed. For this reason, raw foods and juices are very important for good health and our most potent weapon against the nutritional war being waged against us. Ideally, many people believe that we should only eat raw foods, but the reality is that this is nearly impossible for most of us. The answer, as is often the case, is a matter of balance. Balance your diet so that the scales do tip in the direction of raw fruits and vegetables. |

Benford calls for property tax cap to quell fear, uncertainty
First-time State House candidate Alyssia Benford is concerned about the impact increasing property taxes have on Illinois residents.
"As a CPA, I have experienced clients selling their home and moving to other states that have lower property taxes," Benford told the Will County Gazette. "In my area, property taxes range from $5,000 to $13,000 or more. A homeowner is paying $400 to $1,000 a month in property taxes alone.”
Illinois has the second highest property taxes in the country, a new Realtor.com website survey states. That is why Benford, who is running against Rep. Natalie Manley (D-Joliet) for the 98th District seat, is calling for tax reform, explaining that the current property tax rates harm home values and prevent people from being able to purchase homes.
Benford also said some constituents are between jobs and are fearful of losing their homes.
The failure of the government to bring effective change constituents can depend on points to a bigger issue with the state’s current leadership, she said.
"My opponent has made several statements about property taxes, depending on the audience," Benford said. "She voted over 19 times and nothing has been accomplished? That is ineffective leadership and residents of the 98th District deserve better."
Although there might not be a perfect solution to the issue, Benford said a cap is a good place to start.
"A property tax cap is a hybrid of a freeze,” she said. “A cap limits the ability to increase taxes by a more than a certain percentage without a public hearing. There are advantages and disadvantages here as well, but (it) could be a better alternative.”
The 98th District includes DuPage, Joliet, Lockport, Plainfield, Troy and Wheatland.

‘Small-Town Girl’ From Santa Fe Says Gun Control Won’t Solve School Shootings
Kaitlyn Richards was born and raised in Santa Fe, Texas. “I went to Santa Fe High School since I was in kindergarten, all the way through to senior year, and I’m just a small-town girl,” she told The Daily Signal. But on May 18, her small-town life changed when a school shooting left eight students and two teachers dead.
“I think the worst part is waking up in the morning and forgetting that it happened for a moment and then remembering it,” Kaitlyn said. “It’s just a weight on your chest the rest of the day. It’s almost like every moment that you see people being happy, you just feel guilty, because someone doesn’t get to anymore.”
In the weeks and months following the Santa Fe school shooting, few students from Santa Fe called for gun reform.
“I just don’t believe that putting these restrictions and laws are really going to solve anything or help anyone other than the people who already obtain them illegally,” Kaitlyn said. “I would just hate to see laws be in place that hurt innocent people.”
Instead, Kaitlyn and three friends started a nonprofit called Hearts United for Kindness.
“Our mission is just to spread a movement of love and kindness while raising awareness for mental health because we believe that those things are very much related to each other,” she said.

Cherishing our chains

No doubt you'll be as shocked over yet another outrage from the TSA as Capt. Renault was at Casablanca's gambling.
This time, the Thieves and Sexual Assailants are spying on passengers in an anti-constitutional program dubbed "Quiet Skies": "Federal air marshals have begun following ordinary U.S. citizens [at airports and aboard flights] not suspected of a crime or on any terrorist watch list and collecting extensive information about their movements and behavior under a new domestic surveillance program..."
The 4th Amendment absolutely prohibits such horrors, but that hasn't stopped our rulers yet. Indeed, it hasn't even given them pause.
And so "national security expert[s]" are "concern[ed]" not about Quiet Skies' flagrant espionage against us, but about the probability that it "profiles." Profiling is the sole remaining sin in Dim-ocratic eyes... an offense far more damning than sodomy, murdering babies while robbing us to pay for the slaughter or mutilating children's bodies. Accordingly, Dimo-crats castigated the TSA.
So you might suppose they would have rejoiced at another report three days later that the TSA might cease to infest smaller airports. Less victims for it to profile, right? Astoundingly, the agency itself had proposed this unprecedented decrease in its scope; its rationale — and I use the word loosely since rationality at the TSA is as scarce as courage among politicians — is that "eliminating passenger screening at more than 150 small and medium-sized airports across the U.S., ...serving aircraft with 60 seats or fewer could bring [only] a 'small (non-zero) undesirable increase in risk related to additional adversary opportunity.'" Moreover, "the move could save $115 million annually," which the agency would squander on more harassment at larger airports.
Given Dim-ocrats' fear that Quiet Skies relies on profiling as well as the fact that the TSA's incompetent buffoons have never caught a single terrorist despite groping millions of travelers, wouldn't you think the Left, including the fake-news media, would have applauded — heck, would have leapt to their feet in a standing O — at any reduction in the agency's reign of terror?But such a reaction would be far too logical for "Democratic Socialists," aka, Marxists. Instead, they got their collective panties in a wad. You could hear the caterwauling all the way to Lenin's Tomb: "It simply boggles the mind to even think that the TSA has plans like this on paper in the first place," UpChuck Schumer [Communist-NY] whined. And fellow-traveler Ed Markey from the People's Republic of Massachusetts "is 'deeply troubled by this proposal.'"
Their lackeys in the media echoed and amplified the hysteria: "CNN terrorism analyst Paul Cruickshank said it was 'stunning that this is even seriously being considered. Al-Qaida and ISIS still regard aviation as a priority target...' he said. 'They would see that as a way to hit the headlines. They would see that as a way to inflict severe economic damage on the United States...'"
Is anyone surprised that our rulers and their fourth estate columnists hyperventilate over the slightest easing of our chains? We expect no less from these bozos. What astounds and saddens are the allegations that passengers supposedly object to this bit of freedom, too.
I say "supposedly" because those allegations come from the fake-news corps. Whenever I encounter such claims, I remember the complaints of an acquaintance who wrote for that Old Crazy — sorry, Gray Lady, The New York Times. She moaned that when she filed a story departing even slightly from the Times' Progressive agenda, her editors would dictate what her sources should have said, then send her back to her phone for "more accurate" quotes. Yes, this is hearsay. Yes, you'll have to trust me since I didn't tape our conversation. But still, it explains the propaganda the Fourth Estate feeds us, doesn't it?
And so the fake-news teams assert that passengers reject even the tiniest liberation from the TSA: A "frequent flyer" in Louisiana, "traveling hundreds of miles every two weeks ...says he's all for extra security. 'Because of the world we live in today, anything could happen anywhere,' he said. 'I feel better knowing that they're watching over us as we get on these planes.'" And a journalist writing as just another passenger ("It is the route my daughter takes to come here or that I would take to visit her") cravenly asks, "What if a terrorist bought a ticket, checked in and checked his luggage with a timer-triggered bomb in it? What if his bag made it onto the plane but he didn't? Would officials notice and delay the flight long enough to take his bag off the plane? Would they discover this in time?"
What if the Founding Fathers had been fraidy-cats as jittery as this moron? What if the very real, incredibly abundant dangers on the frontier had panicked our great-great grandparents as they surged west? They contended with hungry wild animals and resentful natives eager to scalp trespassers, not mythical "terrorists" invented by a government to justify its enormous power.
But before we rail too much against such Nervous Nellies, let's look in the mirror. How many of us react with the same lunacy in other contexts? We insist we need the State to protect us, though its record for doing so is cataclysmic. We laud and honor cops and demand more of them as they stomp on expectant mothers and shoot or even execute elderly taxpayers. We worship the soldiers who "give us our freedom" while they rape and murder folks who've never harmed us. We believe that corporations and entrepreneurs will cheat us but for the endless bureaucracies hampering them — though only the bureaucratic state can empower such cronies in the first place.
We can certainly blame serfs who defend the TSA for the demise of the can-do, brave and autonomous American spirit. But aren't those who excuse any part of government's behemoth equally responsible?
When you next assume that you "need" the State, recall the cowardly cretins who "need" the TSA.

The Democrats Have No Idea What Demons They Are Unleashing

A few weeks ago, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) wrote an article for Vox explaining the movement’s goals – to end capitalism and radically change America.
In normal times, the declarations of a fringe party and ideology in America would not merit much attention. However, these are not normal times. A new Gallup pollshows that more Democrats have a favorable view of socialism than capitalism.
This pattern has been building for a while. Senator Bernie Sanders took socialism mainstream in the party during the 2016 Democratic presidential primary. Since then, Democratic Party candidates have been increasingly attaching themselves to the ideology. Most notably, a telegenic young member of the Democratic Socialists of America named Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez defeated a senior Democrat in New York’s 14th Congressional District and has since been on a whirlwind media tour, spreading the gospel of socialism.
So, the Vox article (or manifesto) is worth taking seriously.
Reading it, I was struck by two things.
First, it was remarkably honest.
The writer, Meagan Day, a member of the East Bay Chapter of DSA, explicitly debunks the apologists in the mainstream media trying to paper over the group’s radicalism. She quotes several prominent news “analysts” who argue that Democratic Socialism is just New Deal liberalism rebranded. She then dumps a bucket of cold water on them, writing, “[i]n the long run, Democratic Socialists want to end capitalism.”
In fact, she writes that the liberal, big government reforms which the movement has chosen to rally behind in partnership with the Democratic Party are simply stepping stones to this eventual goal.
“Social democratic reforms like Medicare-for-all are, in the eyes of DSA, part of the long, uneven process of building that support, and eventually overthrowing capitalism,” she writes.
This explicit goal of ending capitalism makes clear what Ocasio-Cortez meant when she said cryptically in a recent interview, that “[c]apitalism has not always existed in the world, and it will not always exist in the world.”
This is a clear threat to the system which has made us prosperous and the envy of the world, but I appreciate the honesty. Ultimately, the United States is a democratic republic. If Day, Ocasio-Cortez, and Senator Bernie Sanders want to try and convince most Americans to end capitalism and embrace a planned, totally redistributionist economy, they are welcome to use the democratic process to do so. It is up to those of us who know better to convince Americans of socialism’s folly (more on that in a later newsletter).
However, the second notable item in Day’s article suggests that Democratic Socialists don’t value democracy all that much. Day also identified herself as a staff writer at a New York-based, socialist magazine called Jacobin. In fact, several members of the Democratic Socialists of America are writers and editors at Jacobin magazine.
A magazine that would enthusiastically embrace this title is signaling that, like socialist movements of the past, the DSA is willing to drop the “democratic” part of their moniker and instead rely on the traditional method for socialist revolution – bloodshed, violence, and tyranny.
The Jacobins were the most violent and radical political group of the French Revolution. Led by Maximilien Robespierre, the group responded to a growing backlash against the revolution by executing anyone their so-called Committee of Public Safety deemed insufficiently loyal. The Jacobin clubs located throughout the country were used as a secret police force to root out dissent among politicians and the general populace alike. Historian Timothy Tackett estimates that almost 40,000 people were killed under the Jacobin control of the French government. Many were beheaded by guillotine in a grotesque public spectacle after a show trial, and others were brutally executed with firearms. In the case of one period in the city of Lyon, people were executed en masse by cannon fire. This period of carnage was known as the Reign of Terror.
A few years ago, Callista and I saw Dialogues of the Carmelites at the Washington National Opera. It is a moving, true story of the Carmelite Nuns who refused to denounce Christ at the peak of the Reign of Terror. (The French Revolution was virulently anti-Catholic – many churches were closed and reopened as “Temples of Reason.”) The nuns were beheaded for their unwillingness to denounce their faith. Moments before the guillotine dropped, they displayed the power of God’s love by singing hymns and renewing their vows.
A few years later we visited the Picpus Cemetery in Paris. It holds the graves of the martyred nuns and more than 1,300 victims of the Terror in a six-week period of 1794. It is a very sober reminder of what the Jacobins did during the Reign of Terror. It is not a record for which any American should advocate.
Christopher Hibbert’s The French Revolution contains more vivid details of the horrors the Jacobins inflicted upon the people of France. In one instance, he writes, “a woman was charged with the heinous crime of having wept at the execution of her husband. She was condemned to sit several hours under the suspended blade which shed upon her, drop by drop, the blood of the deceased whose corpse was above her on the scaffold before she was released by death from her agony.”
Make no mistake: This is the history of violent revolution, religious oppression, and dictatorship that Jacobin magazine, the DSA, and opportunistic Democrats are embracing – whether they know it or not. Senator Sanders, and more have recently shared articles from Jacobin magazine on their social media accounts. Representative Keith Ellison once sent a Jacobin piece to everyone in Congress.
It is hard to imagine a modern-day Reign of Terror happening in America. But consider the recent phenomenon of outrage mobs on social media demanding people be fired and ostracized for expressing un-PC points of view. Think about the left-wing activists taking over classrooms to prevent conservative voices from speaking. Think about the rash of people being attacked for wearing MAGA hats. Think about the violence of Antifa.
Perhaps it is not so difficult to imagine.
While I do not know Ocasio-Cortez, I have interacted with Senator Sanders numerous times in my career. He is an earnest guy, and I seriously doubt he would countenance violence in pursuit of his socialist goals.
He should keep in mind, however, that the Jacobins eventually turned on Robespierre (in fact they executed him). So perhaps Senator Sanders and the other Democrats rushing to embrace Democratic Socialism should be a little more careful about the demons they are unleashing to win elections.
