Building Permits for Repair and Maintenance of your property is an
example of big government vs. small government. There is a political correct
issue on both sides. The Small Government group does not want expansion of
government or more rules and regulations. We feel the less Government is
involved the better.
The Big Government group feels it is the responsibility of
government to protect people from themselves. This group sees the citizen as
unable to do the right thing. In an effort, to protect them, they want more
rules and regulations. They believe if not forced to do repairs or maintenance
on your own property correctly, someone buying your property in the future is
not protected, they believe that most every repair is a life safety issue and
must be inspected. Government is the parent of the citizen.
The result, is laws that say you need a permit to replace some
damaged siding on your property, replace an existing door with one exactly the
same, replace the trap under your sink, and on and on. In saying no
to the existing rules, the argument gets heated when the discussion of people
living outside a city (unincorporated) to get away from the rules, taxes, and
regulations of the cities.
