Trump’s speech to globalists (video)
President Donald Trump addressed a globalist crowd in Davos, Switzerland, Friday, reminding attendees that he intends to “always put America first” before inviting them to invest in the United States.
The speech at the annual World Economic Forum in Davos was unusual for its venue: A president who campaigned against globalism sought to define his “America First” policy to an audience of international elites who view free trade and global cooperation as bedrock principles.
“As president of the United States I will always put America first,” Trump said. “But America first does not mean America alone. When the United States grows, so does the world.”
Trump’s Davos speech was seen as a chance to gauge the president’s ability to build rapport with global elites he repeatedly trashed while on the 2016 campaign trail.
As Fortune noted:
Ahead of the address, the conference buzzed with speculation of how the president, elected to office on an “America First” platform, would play on a stage built to toast global integration. Had Trump traveled to the snowy Swiss town to thumb his nose at the global elites? Or would Trump seek to appease an audience that had, just a year ago, recoiled at his election and the era of American protectionism it seemed to usher in?
The president noted that his administration’s deregulatory and tax policies are making the U.S. a friendlier place to do business.
“America is open for business and we are competitive once again,” Trump said.
“Now is the perfect time to bring your business, your jobs and your investments to the United States” Trump added. “We are freeing our business and workers so they can thrive as never before.”
